The real circle of competence in microplastics analysis
In microplastics research, there’s a simple but often overlooked question: What is the smallest particle size you can actually detect with your current setup?
This isn’t about the theoretical sensitivity of advanced instruments—it’s about your real, practical detection limit, given your available filters, digestion efficiency, optics, and identification methods.
Why does this matter?

Because reporting data without clearly stating your detection limits leads to overinterpretation and misleading comparisons. If your lab can only detect particles >300 µm, your results do not represent all microplastics present—just the detectable fraction.
Common pitfalls:
- Using a 250 µm mesh but drawing conclusions about particles <100 µm.
- Ignoring recovery efficiency or procedural blanks.
- Reporting total microplastics without defining your lower size limit.
Be transparent: acknowledge your limitations.
State clearly in your methods section:
“Particles smaller than 50 µm were not reliably captured or analyzed due to equipment constraints.”
This builds trust and allows for real comparability across studies. Being precise about what your data does not include is as important as what it does.
